//Chrétien takes heat over Kyoto
Former PM was not ready to meet targets when Canada signed on, adviser says

OTTAWA -- Former prime minister Jean Chrétien committed Canada to the Kyoto Protocol fully expecting to fall short of the targets, the man who served as his trusted policy adviser says.

Eddie Goldenberg made the surprising comments in a London, Ont., speech yesterday as the House of Commons is deadlocked over whether it is too late for Canada to meet its 2012 emission-reduction targets.//

//Here's to the Jaccardian approach to clean air
Jeffrey Simpson

In the Jaccardian approach, there must be government regulations setting clear, mandatory targets, easily attainable at first, then more demanding as the years go by, so that companies, governments and consumers can adjust.

Canada cannot reach its Kyoto target by taking 265 megatonnes of carbon from its economy in the next two to six years; it's impossible. Prof. Jaccard correctly says: Forget Kyoto, phase one. We blew it, period. But get on with the job of reducing emissions starting now, but starting smart.//

Why Should I Sell Your Wheat?

I am starting a blog where I will comment/rant on my soapbox about Canada, Canadian politics, Canada's place in the world, or whatever happens to be on my mind.

It will be a place where I can formulate and experiment with ideas, and throw stuff out there into the ether...accumulate notes on my thinking for the book on Canada that I will probably never write.

The title is based on the thesis, that for better or for worse, we all live in Trudeau's Canada. We are all "children of Trudeau" in affirmation or in rejection of him.

I was born on a farm in north of Edmonton. "Why should I sell your wheat?" is Trudeau's challenge to Western Canadians, his challenge to me, to finish what (I would argue) that he was incapable of, bring the West into the bosom of the federation, as he had brought Quebec (albeit imperfectly).

And so it begins...
